La Défense :
Europe's largest business district

Some historical information :

The name of this business district has its origin in a monument by Louis-Ernest Barrias " La Défense de Paris " erected in honour of the soldiers who defended the city during the war of 1870. Today this work of art can be found in La Défense Square (Le Parvis de La Défense).

The history of La Défense goes back to 1958, when the EPAD (Etablissement public pour l'aménagement de La Défense) was created to administer the district. Factories and shantytown gave way to the first high rises.

In the early 80s, Les Quatre Temps shopping centre was created beside the CNIT . It was not until 1992 that Metro Line 1 was extended with two stations at La Défense.
